Should you repair or replace your hot water system? The cost-vs-age rule of thumb, warranty and efficiency factors, and when a repair is genuinely the right call.

## The one question that settles most cases

Before any maths, there is a single diagnostic that decides a large share of these situations: where is the fault?

If the failure is a component bolted to the outside of a sound cylinder, it is a repair. That covers heating elements, thermostats, thermocouples, gas control valves, pressure temperature relief valves, tempering valves, pumps and controllers. All of these are replaceable parts on a system that may still have years left.

If the failure is the cylinder itself, it is a replacement. A tank that has corroded through at the base seam cannot be repaired, patched or welded in any way you should accept. The steel has thinned from the inside out over years, and a repair to one spot simply means the next thinnest spot goes instead.

## The cost-versus-age rule of thumb

Where the cylinder is sound and the choice is genuinely open, we use a simple test on site.

The logic is straightforward. A repair buys you the remaining life of the cylinder, not a fresh start. Spending $500 on a thirteen-year-old tank that is already showing rust in the water buys you months, not years, and you will be having this conversation again shortly, quite possibly at 10pm.

## Three factors that shift the answer

**Warranty.** Check before you pay for anything. Cylinders often carry 5 to 10 year warranties depending on brand and model, with shorter terms on parts and labour. If your tank is inside its warranty period and has failed, that is a manufacturer conversation rather than a repair invoice. We handle those claims on behalf of customers regularly.

**Efficiency.** This is the factor people most often leave out. Water heating accounts for roughly 25% of a typical Australian household’s energy bill. If your current system is old electric storage, a repair keeps you paying the highest running cost available for another few years. A heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity for the same hot water, and federal Small-scale Technology Certificates usually take $800 to $1,500 or more off the price at point of sale. That changes the comparison meaningfully.

**Timing and disruption.** A repair today is quicker than a replacement today. But if the system is clearly near the end, choosing a repair simply moves the replacement to a date you do not control, most likely mid-winter or over the holidays, at emergency rates, with whatever unit can be sourced that afternoon.

## When repair is clearly the right call

Plenty of times, honestly. A five-year-old system with a failed element. A gas unit whose pilot will not stay lit because the thermocouple has weakened. A weeping pressure relief valve. A solar system with a dead circulation pump but perfectly good collectors. A tempering valve that has drifted out of range.

All of these are inexpensive parts on systems with years of life remaining, and replacing the whole system over any of them would be a waste of money. If someone quotes you a full replacement for a fault in that list without testing the alternative first, get a second opinion.

When the unit is under about eight years old and the repair costs well under half the price of a replacement. Elements, thermostats, thermocouples and valves are all inexpensive parts on a system that still has years left in the cylinder.
